The Roots vacuum pump has two rotary pistons (1, 2) rotating in opposite senses in a pump chamber (3). An intake (6) ends at the interface between the two part-cylindrical pump chamber halves (3a, 3b). Opposite the intake (6) there are two or more outlet discharge channels (10, 12) that end on both sides of the transition edge (5) between the two pump chamber halves, and whose outer ends can each be closed by non-controlled discharge valves (14, 16) that open and close in response to the pressure differential between the pump chamber and the outlet channel (10, 12). The achievable pressure differential between the intake and outlet is increased by the separate discharge channels (10, 12) with associated discharge valves (14, 16). An improved removal of the heat of compression is achieved by feeding in a coolant through a slide valve controlled by the rotary motion of the rotary piston. <IMAGE>
