A process for producing magnetic powder of uniform and fine sizes using an alkali-producing enzyme, which is suited for producing magnetic powder of a comparatively small size such as about 50 to 500 nm in average particle size. This process involves the step of alkalinizing an iron ion solution using an alkali-producing enzyme and a substrate for the enzyme to produce at least one of iron oxide, iron hydroxide and iron oxyhydride. This process enables production of magnetite (Fe3O4), maghemite ( gamma -Fe2O3), etc. and their starting materials such as goethite ( alpha -FeO(OH)), hematite ( alpha -Fe2O3), and lepidocrocite ( gamma -FeO(OH)). These magnetic powders may be utilized for magnetic recording or magnetic fluid, as carriers for bioreactors, for magnetic separation of cells or biopolymers, or as magnetic powders for microcarriers of, for example, drugs.
|
