A welding process for the manufacture of high carbon steel wire screens which comprises heating at least one high carbon steel wire at the vicinity of its junction with at least one similar wire placed thereacross, maintaining said heat for a sufficient period of time to allow heat to disperse to adjacent wire areas but insufficient to cause wire fusion thereby, welding said wires together and subsequently raising heat in a post weld heating step to a second temperature in the upper critical range thereby forming a substantially strong metallic union of said wires and subsequently quenching the resulting wire screen.
