Prepn. comprises reacting, in a non-polar organic solvent, (A) at least one hydroxyaromatic alkali metal salt of formula R1 (OM)a (I) (R1 = about 6-30C aromatic radical; M = alkali metal a = 1 or 2) with (B) at least one substd. imide of formula (II) (Ar = aromatic radical; R2 = H or about 1-13C hydrocarbon-based radical; X1 = halo or nitro) in the presence of (C) a phase transfer catalyst comprising at least one bis-quat. salt of formula (R4)k(+)Q(R3)m(+)Q(R4)k(X2(-))2 (III) Each R3 = is dependently a divalent hydrocarbon-based radical and all R3 taken together contain about 4-12C atoms.; each R4 = independtnely a lower hydrocarbon-based radical; Q = N or P X2 = anion-forming atom or radical; k = 1-3; m = 4-k; and at least 3 of the R3 and R4 radicals attached to each Q atom is aliphatic or alicyclic. A compsn. comprising at least one cpd. of formula (I), at least one cpd. of formula (II) and at least one salt of formula (III) is also claimed. |
