Method and device for measuring, using a light beam, the distance between a reference point and a point on the surface of an object. The light beam is emitted in the direction of the reference point 6, the light beam is split at the reference point into a primary beam 7 and a secondary beam 8, the primary beam is directed on to the said point 13 on the surface 14 of the object, the secondary beam is directed on to a mirror 12 arranged to move parallel to itself in the direction of the secondary beam, whilst remaining perpendicular to the plane defined by the primary and secondary beams, the mirror 12 is moved so as to cause the secondary beam 15 reflected by the mirror to pass through the said point 13 on the surface of the object, the distance between the reference point and the mirror is measured, and from this distance, the distance between the reference point and the said point on the surface of the object is calculated. <IMAGE>
