PURPOSE:To manufacture a high density molded carbon body having superior impermeability by molding a kneaded composition contg. thermosetting resin powder, a thermosetting resin soln. and graphite or carbon powder, calcining the molded body, impregnating a thermosetting resin soln. into the calcined body, and carrying out calcination at a high temp. in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:To 100pts.wt. powder of a thermosetting resin convertible into glassy carbon by carbonization and calcination in a nonoxidizing atmosphere such as phenolic resin is added <=50pts.wt. powder of crystalline carbon such as graphite or amorphous carbon such as carbon black, and after adding an aqueous or oily soln. of a thermosetting resin such as phenolic resin, they are kneaded. An org. binder such as methylcellulose may be added. The kneaded composition is extrusion-molded into a plate, and the plate is rolled with rolls. The resulting sheet is dried at 100-180 deg.C and calcined. A thermosetting resin soln. is impregnated into the calcined body, and calcination is carried out at 1,000-2,000 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to obtain an impermeable molded carbon article having high density and strength. |
