PURPOSE:To improve abrasion resistance of a cutting tool by constituting the cutting tool of a sintered body comprising a base material Al2O3 contg. TiC, TiN, TiB2, or a solid soln. thereof wherein said sintered body is contained in the cutting tool in a form of particles having a specified mean particle size. CONSTITUTION:The shaft shaped ceramic cutting tool comprises a sintered body consisting of a base material Al2O3 contg. at least one kind among TiC, TiN, TiB2, and solid soln. thereof., wherein at least one among TiC, TiN, TiB2, and solid soln. thereof is dispersed in 5-35vol.% and said sintered body consists of particles having <=0.8mu mean particle size. The component consisting of TiC, TiN, TiB or solid soln. thereof has great inhibiting effect for the growth of crystal particles between Al2O3 during sintering causing formation of fine sintered texture and increasing the toughness of the cutting tool. When content of TiC, TiN, TiB2, or solid soln. thereof is <5vol.%, sufficient inhibiting effect for the growth of crystal particles is not obtd. On the other hand, when the value exceeds 35vol.%, the content of Al2O3 is so small that expected hardness or expected abrasion resistance is not obtd. |
