In a portable gas metabolism chamber for measuring the gas metabolism processes in photosynthesis and in respiration as well as in transpiration of plants in the natural habitat, the convenient and versatile apparatus has a handle and a quartz glass dome pressed onto a baseplate. For more convenient measurement of plants whose natural habit is horizontal, the measurement chamber aperture is arranged perpendicular to the axis of the handle. In order not to transmit the heat of the hand from the metallic handle to the housing walls, plastic elements are interposed in this heat flow.
