PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal display device which has an excellent threshold characteristic and good color display characteristic by adjusting the relations of transmittance with the wavelengths of a polarizer and analyzer. CONSTITUTION:This color liquid crystal display device is constituted by holding a nematic liquid crystal layer 8 having a layer thickness (d) between a pair of electrode substrate 4, 5 in such a manner that the liquid crystal molecules form the twisted spiral structure having a twist angle phi in the thickness direction of said layer and providing the polarizer 9 and the analyzer 10 respectively on the outside of the above-mentioned substrates. The twisted angle phi of the above-mentioned display device is set in a 180 deg.<=phi<=300 deg. range. The product DELTAn.d of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn of the nematic liquid crystal and the layer thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer 8 is set in a 0.3mum<=DELTAn.d<=0.7mum range and the light transmittance of at least either of the polarizer 9 or the analyzer 10 is so set as to be higher on the longer wavelength side on a visible light range. The sharp threshold characteristic of the impressed voltage-transmittance characteristics is, therefore, obtd. and the color display quality is improved. The color display image having the excellent color reproducibility and high contrast is thus obtd. |
