Fuel from the diesel tank is delivered by a motor-driven delivery pump via a filter, heat exchanger and thermostat to the injection pump of the Diesel engine. Fuel which is not burnt in the cylinders flows via a return pipe to the tank. The heat exchanger uses a secondary heating medium e.g. water or glycol anti-freeze to preheat the fuel. The fuel flows through a pipe which passes down through the middle of a cylindrical jacket containing the heating fluid. It then flows back up over the helical fin which occupies most of the space between the outer wall of the jacket and the outer wall of the unit. The use of the helical fin in place of the ridged jacket wall described in the previous application improves the heat transfer process.
|
