<p>The shaft of the 3 kW electrical motor is coupled to a hollow cylindrical flywheel. The mass of the flywheel is in its outer skin which is linked to the lightweight boss by four spokes. The flywheel shaft is coupled to the gearbox by a multiple ridge belt drive. The gearbox output power is transmitted to the vehicle's front drive wheels. A magnetically-operated clutch can couple the inside of the belt drive pulley to a tapered drive collar on the output shaft of the i.c engine. The engine is also coupled to belts by two 3 kW alternators. The flywheel shaft rotates in bearings in light metal plates, which support a fibre-glass cover. Both the electrical motor and engine can supply torque to the gearbox.</p> |
