PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for intermediate of liquid crystal compound readily and industrially, by decomposing a bis(4- hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, a novel compound, as a raw material without using a hydrogen acceptor. CONSTITUTION:A bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid shown by formula III, a novel compound, obtained by condensing a cyclohexanone- carboxylic acid shown by formula I (R is H or lower alkyl; R<2> is lower alkyl; m is 0-4) with a phenol shown by formula II (R<1>=R<2>; n=m) is decomposed in a solvent, preferably water in the presence of both a decomposing catalyst of a base such as NaOH or acid catalyst and a hydrogen transfer catalyst, preferably Pd/C under mild condition (higher ratio) at 100-400 deg.C to give a compound shown by formula IV and a compound shown by formula V simultaneously. These compounds are adjusted to proper pH and acid precipitation is carried out to separate and give the high-purity compound shown by formula IV. |
