The invention describes a cylinder head (1) with bores (8, 9) in the combustion chamber plate (10), which allow the web area (2) to reduce the compressive stresses occurring there due to the thermal load. By reducing the stress, the temperature in the web area is lowered and the compressive yield point of the material increased so that the tensile stresses produced as the engine cools do not cause cracks and permanent deformations of the valve openings (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
