PURPOSE:To smoothly switch the number of cylinders in operation without causing large variation in torque in a variable No.-of-cylinders engine in which the number of cylinders in operation is changed by more than one at a time, by performing the change of the operation of cylinders gradually one by one instead of more than one at a time. CONSTITUTION:When a No.-of-cylinders-controller 1 is shifted to the reduced number-of- cylinders operation, the output of said controller 1 varies from ''L'' to ''H'' and it is transmitted to electromagnetic valves 4A and 5A of a cylinder A. Then, fuel injection from an injector 2A is suspended, and a hydraulic tappet 3A is stopped. With this ''H'' signal, terminals P of counters 24 and 32 turn ''H'' level and starts counting the engine revolution pulses. The counter 24 outputs the pulse to a counter 25 for each five counts, turning the Q-terminal output to ''H''. With this, electromagnetic valves 4B and 5B of a cylinder B are operated so that the cylinder B, too, is stopped with the 5-revolution delay as compared with the cylinder A. In addition, when the number of revolution pulses reaches 10, the counter 32 outputs the pulse to F/F33, turning the Q-terminal output to ''H''. Then, electromagnetic valves 4C and 5C of a cylinder C are operated, and the cylinder is C stopped with 10-revolution delay as compared with the cylinder A. With this contrivance, switching of the number of cylinders can be performed smoothly. |
