PURPOSE:To reduce the unnecessary switching frequency of a compression ratio so as to improve durability of a compression ratio controller by prohibiting the switching of the compression ratio when an operating condition of an internal combustion engine is expected to instantly return to the range of practical compression ratio again. CONSTITUTION:An internal combustion engine 1 is provided with a variable compression ratio mechanism 2 capable of changing a compression ratio in response to its operating condition. In this case, an operating condition detecting means 3 is provided for detecting the operating condition of the internal combustion engine expected to instantly return to the range of practical compression ratio again. A compression ratio switching prohibiting means 4 which is connected to the operating condition detecting means 3, is provided to prohibit the switching of the compression ratio by means of a variable compression mechanism 2. With this constitution, the unnecessary switching frequency of a compression ratio can be reduced to improve durability of the variable compression ratio mechanism 2 and also reduced noise, etc., accompanied by the switching of the compression ratio. |
