PURPOSE:To obtain an aralkyl-substituted polyhydric phenol easily, by reacting a polyhydric phenol with an isopropenyl aromatic compound in the presence of a phenolic salt of a metal of Group IIb in the periodic table. CONSTITUTION:A polyhydric phenol, e.g. hydroquinone or resorcin, is reacted with an isopropenyl aromatic compound, e.g. alpha-methylstyrene, in the presence of a phenolic salt of a metal selected from Group IIb in the periodic table, preferably aluminum or boron, particularly a reaction product of the compound of the metal with a phenol, as a catalyst to give an aralkyl-substituted polyhydric phenol. Preferably, the same polyhydric phenol as the reactant is used as the phenol for preparing the above-mentioned catalyst. |
