Alcoholates are prepared from alkali metal hydroxides and aliphatic alcohols whose molecules contain 1 to 6 carbon atoms by mixing an alkali metal hydroxide with an alcohol and reacting at a temperature of 50 to 110 DEG C and a pressure of 0.3 to 1.2 bar, separating the alcohol/water mixture evaporating during the reaction into its components by means of at least one membrane, condensing the alcohol vapour and the water vapour and recycling the alcohol into the reaction.
