The process, starting with a given length of plastics tube, consists of (a) joining the end of the helical wire spring, of external dia. greater than that of the tube, to a fixed point on the tube; (b) fastening the other end of the spring to a rod of greater length than the tube; (c) stretching the spring by pulling the rod, increasing the length and slightly reducing the dia.; (d) passing the rod through the tube and inserting the stretched spring; (e) releasing the tension in the spring; (f) separating the first end of the spring from the fixed point on the tube; and (g) heat treating the assembly of spring and tube.
