PURPOSE: To ensure highly efficient operation even under conditions where leakage of working gas is present, or the like, by setting the frequency of AC current being fed to a linear motor substantially equal to a frequency determined according to a specified formula. CONSTITUTION: An armature coil is connected with an AC power supply having a frequency f0 substantially equal to a frequency (f) provided externally according to formula (I) and energy required for operation is supplied as power. Allowance between the frequencies (f) and f0 is set within±10%. In the formula (I), m = total mass of a reciprocal operation section comprising a piston, a sleeve and the armature coil or a permanent magnet, and the like, Sp = area of the working surface of the piston, Pa = amplitude of pressure fluctuation of working gas in a compression space,α= phase difference between displacement of the piston and the pressure fluctuation of working gas in the compression space, S = piston stroke, and Ks = spring constant of a supporting spring for positioning. According to the arrangement, a resonance state can be achieved substantially even under conditions where leakage of working gas is present thus realizing high efficiency operation.
