The invention relates to a roller for a roller conveyor which transports articles, every roller being driven on one side by a drive wheel, in particular a chain wheel, and there being a coupling between the roller and the drive wheel, which coupling, beyond a particular torque, permits rotation of the roller with respect to the drive wheel. The coupling has a first coupling part coaxial with the roller axis and having a conical mating surface which fits in a coaxial recess, having a conical inner surface, of a second coupling part arranged on the end of the roller. At least one of the coupling parts is axially movable. One of the coupling parts can be pressed against the other coupling part by a spring element.
