The invention relates to a handling and conveying apparatus for articles which, in a loading station, are placed on carrier plate elements of an endless chain which guides the articles through a processing station and from there to an unloading station in which the articles are transferred, one after the other, laterally from the carrier plate elements onto other conveying means. In order to be able to process two or more rows of articles on the carrier plates, it is provided that the carrier plate elements are provided with two or more, generally flat, vertically mutually offset carrier surface parts which are arranged in such a manner that, as seen from the transfer region, they are located outside the one side edge of the chain of carrier plate elements in corresponding planes at increasing height to the rear of the one side edge of the carrier plate elements.
