The invention relates to a device for compacting materials, especially scrap metal, in zones, which device can be installed in upsetting machines used in the scrap metal industry. According to the invention, the device has a stamper which can be actuated by a hydraulic motor and is composed of at least two parts. One part is constituted by an outer hollow bush which is connected to a hydraulic operating motor, while the second part takes the form of a piston element which is displaceably mounted in the interior of the bush. The interior of the bush is filled with a non-compressible medium and is connected to a pressure vessel via a sealing means. The design according to the invention can also be used in other industrial sectors for the same purposes.
