A mercapto-substituted pyridine compound having the general formula (I): <CHEM> where R1 and R2 are hydrogen atom or alkyl group, and n is 0 or 1, and salts thereof and a process for preparing the same are disclosed. The mercapto-substituted pyridine compound is useful as an intermadiate for preparing a herbicidal compound.
