Residual tensile stresses are reduced in weld metal, heat-affected zone and in the adjacent base metal of shells, piping and mechanical components by mechanically introducing compressive stresses in the weld metal, heat-affected zone and adjacent base metal higher than their yield strengths but not exceeding their individual ultimate strengths in compression. The mechanical means for introducing stress to a pipe or shell may comprise split rings.
