Located in a housing (23) connected to a lifting cylinder (10) is a safety clamping device for the piston rod (12) of the lifting cylinder, and it has several clamping elements (37) which are pressed against the outer surface of the piston rod (12) transversely to its longitudinal extent. The individual clamping elements (37) are coupled to pistons (28 to 31) which are guided inside bores (24 to 27) of the housing. They are under the pressure of compression springs (56) which press the pistons together with the clamping elements against the outer surface of the piston rod. For the purpose of releasing the piston rod, pressure fluid is fed to the pistons. The pressure fluid lifts the pistons from the piston rod (12) against the force of the springs (56). The invention is used in lifting cylinders so that those lifting cylinders are protected in their end positions even in the event of leakage flow or pressure drop. <IMAGE>
