METHOD FOR LIQUIFYING GLASS BATCH MATERIAL

Glass is melted by feeding glass batches to a melting tank and flowing the liquefied mass downwardly towards the surface of a pool of molten glass in the furnace, and continually adding fresh batches into the liquefaction zone. Specifically, the fed batch is supported on the stable mass of a glass batch while the liquefied batch is flowing so as to avoid contact of liquefied batch with material other than the mass of glass batch, and the rate of feeding the glass batch to the liquefactions zone is controlled at a rate sufficient to keep constant the volume of the stable mass of batch.
