PURPOSE:To conduct a good printing even to a paper having a high surface- roughness, by providing a thermally expanding means which expands by the heat through a base film to protrude an ink layer. CONSTITUTION:A thermal transfer ink ribbon comprises a thermally expanding means 16 which expands by the heating of a thermal head 13 through a base film 12a of the ink ribbon to protrude an ink layer 12b. As the thermally expanding means 16, a thermally expanding layer 18 made of a thermally expanding substance 17 having a high coefficient of thermal expansion and, for example, consisting of alcohol, water and a sublimating substance is provided between the ink layer 12b and the base film 12a. The ink ribbon constructed in this manner allows the thermally expanding substance 17 to thermally expand to a large extent by the heating of the thermal head 13 through the base film 12a to press down a melting ink of the ink layer 12b against a paper. Therefore, if a paper having a high surface-roughness, such as a rough paper, is used, the ink can compatibly fit even into recessed parts of the paper to be transferred with a high quality.
