PURPOSE:To improve the conversion efficiency, by turning second and fourth switching elements ON together in the quiescent period of the single-phase inverter of the bridgeconnected switching elements. CONSTITUTION:In a single-phase inverter, the series circuit of a first and a second bipolar transistors (Tr)Q1, Q2 and the series circuit of a third and a fourth Tr Q3, Tr Q4, which are arranged in parallel with each other are inserted into a space between both the positive and negative terminals T<+>, T<-> of a DC power source, and a load LD is connected to a space between respective connecting points T1, T2. In a period for producing positive or negative rectangular pulse for driving this inverter, an non-conductive period (quiescent period) is set, and even if the first and the third Tr Q1, Q3 are turned OFF in this period, the second and the fourth Tr Q2, Q4 are turned ON. As this result, even if an inductive load as the load LD is connected to, a loss due to residual storage electric-charge or storage electromagneticenergy and spike voltage can be prevented from being generated.
