CHARACTER INFORMATION INPUT DEVICE

PURPOSE:To improve the recognition rate of character reading by providing a two-dimension photosensor array having a width wider than the width of one character so as to control the character image contrast at a photosensing part of a contact image sensor. CONSTITUTION:A photosensor array 3 is provided to a contact image sensor 1 in the same width as that of an original 2 and the array 3 is formed to be a two-dimension sensor array having the width at least over the width of a character. A lens array 4 is located under the sensor 1 to form nonmagnification erect image of one to one optical system thereby forming the image of a charac ter written on the original 2 onto the array 3. The output of the array 3 comes from a terminal A and is stored tentatively in a memory 6. A recognition sec tion 7 having a built-in dictionary recognizes a character in the memory 6 by means of the pattern matching with a character in the dictionary. A lighting control section 8 controls an output of a light source 5 in response to an output of the recognition section 7 to control the character image contrast at the photosensing part of the sensor 1 to improve the rate of character read recogni tion.
