The motor vehicle has a continuously driven main driving axle. In the drive line to the second axle there is a viscous coupling (32). A planetary gear mechanism is provided between the axles. The internal gear (26) of the planetary gear mechanism is rotatably mounted and can be braked fast by means of a hydraulically actuable brake piston (42). A working space (56) arranged in front of the brake piston (42) is fed with transmission oil by a reciprocating piston pump (60) driven by the main driving axle or is relieved to the transmission oil reservoir (66). With the brake piston (42) applied, the four-wheel drive running via the viscous coupling (32) is in the stand-by position while, with the brake piston (42) released, it is inoperative. <IMAGE>
