PURPOSE:To improve the workability in a state where high corrosion resistance is maintained, by limiting S content in a steel composition and adding Zr in correlation with S content while specifying the upper limit of Zr content. CONSTITUTION:An austenitic stainless steel has a composition consisting of, by weight ratio, <=0.1% C, 0.1-1.0% Si, <=2.0% Mn, 15-30% Cr, 7-30% Ni, <=0.08% N, <=0.04% P, <=0.005% S, 20XS%-0.40% Zr, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. In the above composition, Zr is an important element for improving hot workability and, in order to produce this effect, it is necessary to regulate S content to <=0.005%. The highly corrosion-resistant austenitic stainless steel of this composition can be subjected to hot working free from cracking at high reduction in area.
