PURPOSE:To improve the operability by constituting the titled device so that an input array direction of a character can be selected freely. CONSTITUTION:A document generating device is constituted of a central processor 21 for executing a control of the whole device, an input device 22 of a keyboard, etc., a storage device 23, an external storage device 24, a display device 25 of a CRT, etc. Also, the input device 22 is constituted of the Japanese syllabary keys 22-1 for inputting a KANA (Japanese syllabary) character, etc., a conversion key 22-2 for instructing to convert a KANA character-string to a KANA/KANJI (Chinese character) notation, an input direction conversion key 22-3 for instructing an input array of a character-string, and a selection key 22-4 for selecting an object notation from a candidate of the KANA/KANJI notation, and selecting the input array direction. In this state, when an input direction change instruction is inputted, plural input array directions of the candidate are displayed, and the notation and the character-string which have become the candidate are displayed in the designated input array direction. In such a way, while selecting the input array direction, it can be changed freely.
