Wiper arms (2,3) carrying wiper blades (10,11) are pivotable about pins (6,9) with a linear actuator (15) linked to the arms, comprising an electric motor (21) having a hollow drive shaft (22) with an internally-threaded nut (30) integral with it at its end. A screw threaded output member (27) extends through the hollow drive shaft and is coupled to a nut (30) e.g. by balls. The direction of travel of the output member may be reversed by microswitches (36,37) and a block (41). The motor may be operated at different speeds and intermittently at each speed by a control block (39) and a switch (40). - The microswitches form part of a circuit including a voltage generator. Operation of the motor is accompanied by reciprocating travel of a screw (28) between the two limit positions defined by microswitches and swinging of rocker arms about respective fulcrum pins together with simultaneous transverse sliding of a pin (20) along a slot (19).
