For inscribing stones, such as gravestones, so-called rubber sand jet foils are generally used which have an elastic layer from which the letters are cut. In order to permit free selection of the shape and size of the characters, engraving machines are frequently used in which a cutting head can be made to move above a supporting table in the x and y directions by means of programme control. It is known for a milling cutter to be used as a cutting tool, which does, however, have the disadvantage that no sharp edges can be produced on the characters, owing to the radius of the milling point. In the device according to the invention, this disadvantage is avoided by means of a cutting head (28) which can be moved above a supporting table for the template and has a cutting tool which takes the form of a heatable cutting pin (34) with a conical point (36). The cutting pin (34) is preferably mounted so as to be freely displaceable in the direction of its longitudinal axis. <IMAGE>
