The invention relates to a process for firing ceramic material, in particular bricks, in a tunnel kiln, in which process the material to be fired is passed through the tunnel kiln in countercurrent to the firing gases, is heated up to the firing temperature and is subsequently cooled. In such a process, in order to be able to purify the firing gases of contaminants with less expense and to prevent contaminants depositing on the material being fired, the invention proposes that the firing gases are drawn off from the tunnel kiln in the region of the heating-up zone in which the evolution of inorganic contaminants from the material being fired commences, are passed through a hot-gas desulphurisation plant operating dry and are recirculated in purified form to the tunnel kiln.
