A process for scrubbing out NO and/or SO2 from exhaust gases, such as flue gases, is described, which operates with Fe(II) salts or Cu(II) salts in sulpholane. The scrubbing medium, after it becomes loaded, is easily regenerated by heating and/or pressure reduction, after which the scrubbing medium is reusable. A slight reduction in concentration of Fe(II) occurring as a result of oxidation can be compensated for by simple means. The process permits NO and/or NOx to be scrubbed out alone or together with SO2. If SO2 is to be scrubbed out alone from a gas mixture, the addition of salts can be dispensed with. <IMAGE>
