PURPOSE:To prevent a passenger from colliding against a steering wheel by generating gas by a gas generator at the time a G-sensor switch detects a vehicle colision and using the gas through a piston assembly to separate a steering column from the vehicle body. CONSTITUTION:If a deceleration or acceleration larger than a specified value is produced by a vehicle collision and a G sensor switch 3 is turned on, an igniter 26 of a gas generator 4 is energized with a current and gunpowder 25 explodes to generate gas. Due to the gas pressure, a piston 64 of a piston assembly 5 tends to be pushed upward. As the movement of the piston is restrained by a 2nd connection member 10, a piston tube 23 is relatively moved downward to displace a steering column 18 forward via a 1st connection member 16 so that the steering column 18 is separated from a pedal bracket 17 as a supporting member extending from a vehicle body 2 toward a passenger compartment.
