PURPOSE:To enable a lathe to surely store and hold even a tool of long size and heavy weight, further to directly supply this held tool to a tool rest by providing a plurality of tool holding means, for holding the tool along the axial line of a main spindle in the periphery of a headstock, enabled to be turned and driven along the circumference. CONSTITUTION:A lathe, which turns a rotary drum 6 by driving an index motor 15 by the predetermined angle together with each tool holding device 10, performs positioning of the tool holding device 10, holding a tool 26 used for boring, in a tool feed position X1. Next the lathe, after it opens an opening and closing part 19a of a cover 19 through a door 21 of an opening and closing rod 20 by driving a cylinder 22, performs positioning of the positioned tool holding device 10 to a tool exchange position X2 by driving a feed cylinder 17. Thereafter the lathe, suitably moving a tool rest 27, performing positioning of its tool holding part 27a in a position opposed to the tool 26 to be used and holding its tapered shank part 26a to be inserted to this tool holding part 27a, performs boring work by the tool 26.
