PURPOSE:To constitute an expanded LAN of optimum spanning tree type easily without resetting an identifier by allowing each interconnection device between LANs to monitor the total sum of the values representing the weight given to a local area network to be connected. CONSTITUTION:An inter-bridge protocol processing section 22 sends a total weight sum given from a weight relax management section 23 together with other identifier information included in a HELLOW message. When a HELLOW message having a larger weight total sum than that of itself is received, the inter-LAN interconnection device aborts to be a root bridge. Thus, the inter- LAN interconnection device having the largest weight total sum W is selected as the root bridge. Thus, the weight total sum is always changed timewise dynamically to constitute a required tree type expanded LAN.
