PURPOSE:To abut a scanner upon lines of a place card successively from the least significant line by detecting the start of reverse reading by a reverse reading start deciding means, storing read lines sequentially in an first-in last-out (FILO) storing means, detecting the end of reverse reading by a reverse reading end deciding means, and then outputting the read lines in the reverse order to the storing order. CONSTITUTION:When the scanner 1 is abutted upon an original 3, characters on the original 3 is detected by an image sensor 6 and read out by a line recognizing means 16 and the line recognized result RLINE is sent to a FILO storage means 17. When a storage instruction is generated from the reverse reading start deciding means 18, the means 17 sequentially stores the result RLINE. When a reading instruction is generated from the reverse reading end deciding means 19, line recognized results ROUT are outputted in the reverse order against the line storing order. Thereby, the line recognized results obtained from the storage instruction by the means 18 up to the reading instruction by the means 19 can be outputted in the reverse order. Consequently, the scanner can be abutted upon the lines of a price card successively from the least significant line.
