Compound brush 1 which is to be applied against the commutator 3 of an electrical machine especially of a motor-vehicle starter, which brush 1 is composed of two parts 10, 11 of different materials, one of the parts 10, 11 consisting of a material having a lower contact resistance than the other part 10, 11, characterised in that the parts 10, 11 have a shape such that the contact surface area 1a on the commutator 3 of the part 10 of the brush 1, consisting of the material having the lowest resistance, has a maximum value at the start of the brush 1 and decreases progressively as the said brush 1 wears away. <IMAGE>
