PURPOSE:To lighten weight, by using the power rectifier, the power inverter, and the AC generator of a generating set for setting engine power to be a driving source, as engine starters. CONSTITUTION:While an engine works the AC output of variable frequency according to the variable speed of the engine for output generated from an AC generator 2 is converted to the AC output of constant voltage and constant frequency by a power rectifier 3 and a power inverter 4 and is fed via a filter 5. In the meantime, at the time of starting the engine, one of change-over switches 12 is changed over from the side of the AC generator 2 to the power source side on ground, and the other one is changed over from the side of the filter 5 to the side of the generator 2, and the power inverter 4 is controlled according to rotor position signal from a position detector 10. As a result, weight can be lightened, and the peripheral section of the engine can be simplified.
