PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF DINITRILLES BY HYDROCYANATION

Dinitriles are prepd. by adding HCN to non-conjugated, unsaturated nitriles in the presence of a promoted zero-valent nickel catalyst in a primary reaction zone under hydrocyanation conditions to produce a dinitrile product effulent contg. at least 1000ppm unreacted HCN. The effulent is passed through a secondary zone in the absence of added HCN being maintained in the range of 45-85↿C. The process gives higher yields without increasing level and/or activity of catalyst and promoter in the primary reaction zone.
