PURPOSE:To prevent the lowering of a processing ability at a mail matter distribution device or the like by distributing in turn the paper sheets carried by its carrying means to each of other plural carrying means when the jam of paper sheets are detected. CONSTITUTION:A mail matter is taken out one by in turn in the state of a standing position from a supply portion 1, and its postal zone number is read at a reading portion 7 via a carrying passage 5, and then, a CPU 21 opens an equivalent, for example, distribution gate 11c, and a mail matter is housed in a classification box 15c. Here, if a jam should occur, a jam detector circuit 33 detects it, and then, the CPU 21 stops the drive of a take-out portion 3 and a classification carrying passage 13c through a take-out portion control circuit 23 and a carrying motor drive circuit 25, and distributes in turn mail matters mounted on the carrying passage 5 among 17a-17f excepting a reject accumulation portion 17c, and then stops a device. Thus, when a paper jam has occurred, the lowering of a processing ability can be prevented by coping with it promptly.
