PURPOSE:To perform the selective switching of a home presence mode, an office presence mode, and an absence mode corresponding to the status of a user side, by changing the setting of a mode to the absence mode when no response of a telephone set is obtained and a line is disconnected in a presence mode, and restoring the mode to the presence mode after the mode is set and changed to the absence mode and a prescribed time elapses. CONSTITUTION:In a state where the presence mode is set, when a telephone call signal arrives from a transmission side via a telephone line 14, the signal is detected by a call signal detecting means 22, and a bell is rung for the prescribed time(appropriate number of times) to urge the response of the telephone set 1. When no response is issued by the telephone set 1 and the line is disconnected, the setting mode is changed from the presence mode to the absence mode automatically. Furthermore, the titled device is constituted so that the mode can be restored again to the presence mode automatically when the prescribed time elapses after the setting of the absence mode is changed. In such a way, it is possible to perform the selective switching of the home presence and the office presence modes or the absence mode corresponding to the status of the user side, and to always perform the optimum transmission/ reception of a message.
