PURPOSE:To contrive reduction of necessary control rods or neutron absorbers by forming a reactor core of a metal fuel element and an oxide fuel element and arranging the metal fuel element in the neighborhood of an inserting position of the control rods of the reactor core. CONSTITUTION:Start-up rods indicated by mark T, operating rods indicated by mark P and safety rods indicated by mark S are arranged in a reactor core part 11. A fuel assembly M composed of a metal fuel element such as U-Pu-Zr alloy and an alloy in which zirconium near 10% is added is arranged in the neighborhood of the operating rods P and the safety rods S. The reactor core part 11 is another fuel assembly composed of an oxide fuel element such as (U+Pu)O2. Thus, neutron flux in a neutron absorber is higher than the conventional one, and absorbed quantity is increased near 5%. Therefore, necessary control rods or neutron absorbers can be reduced.
