PURPOSE:To make the overall length of an electric starting motor small and enable the easy mounting thereof to an engine by coupling a nut as a stopper to the threaded part of an output rotary shaft tip in such a way as not to project outside a pinion. CONSTITUTION:A nut 14 as a stopper is coupled to a threaded part 13 on the tip of an output rotary shaft 5 in such a way as not to project outside a pinion 9. When an electromagnetic switch is applied with voltage, a plunger is attracted, and a lever 3 is turned for advancing the pinion 9 to the right side together with an overrunning clutch 4, the pinion 9 engages with the ring gear of an engine, thereby transmitting torque. In this case, the forward shift of the pinion 9 is restricted due to contact with the edge of the nut 14 as a stopper at a stepped part 9a. As the nut 14 is so made as not to project outside the pinion 9, an electric starting motor when mounted to the engine does not interfere with a flywheel and the like, and the overall length of the motor can be made small.
