PURPOSE:To prevent line disconnection and thinning of one dot, and to execute recording of high resolution by enlarging a light beam spot diameter in accordance with whether adjacent picture element information is irradiation information or non-irradiation information. CONSTITUTION:A digital image signal is inputted successively to shift memories 10-12 of a 3-line portion. In the memory 11, picture element information of a main scanning line containing the light beam information in the course of irradiation is stored, and in the memories 10, and 12, image element information of the main scanning line being adjacent in the subscanning direction is recorded. Accordingly, from the memories 10-12, the image element information of at least four points being adjacent to a light beam spot in the course of irradiation is obtained, and these information is supplied to a discriminating circuit 13. The circuit 13 discriminates whether input information is photoirradiation information or nonirradiation information, and sends a control signal 14 for changing a size of a light beam spot diameter of a semiconductor laser, to a laser driving circuit 15. The circuit 15 changes a size of the light beam spot diameter of the laser by image irradiation information Sij and the signal 14, and irradiates a photosensitive body.
