A coal cutting machine has cutting tools mounted on the links (1) of an endless chain. Each link (1) has a longitudinal dovetail groove, whilst the tool holder (13) and deflector (12) have dovetail tongues (14) which fit in these grooves. The dovetail groove extends over the whole length of the link, but is interrupted by a central recess (9). This recess is longer than the length of the tool holder. This feature enables the tool holder to be removed without removing the deflector.
