The invention relates to a method for operating remote-controllable measuring stations M1...5 from one or more central measuring stations Z1...3 via the STD network. The measuring stations are connected to the STD network in each case like a normal subscriber line HA. So that they cannot, however, be interrogated or manipulated by any subscribers T, the connection between the central measuring station Z and measuring station M is set up in a multi-step process. The central measuring station Z initially dials the required measuring station M and transmits to it a code identifying it. The measuring station M stores this code and then releases the connection. The code is tested for correctness and then the measuring station M dials the call number of the central measuring station which corresponds to the received code and which the measuring station M contains in a register. <IMAGE>
